Abbott Division of the Established Pharmaceuticals requested my help to create an interface to aid in researching Patient Outcomes regarding the use of an established drug - Duphaston. The goal was to leverage the available "Virtual Nurse" AI Assistant to support IVF patients through their treatment and help Abbott collect patient data/feedback around the use of Abbott's drug Duphaston.

Overview

❏  Joined at the initial brief phase as a Design Program Delivery Owner from Abbott
❏  Conducted design discovery workshops with the cross-functional partners and stakeholders to align on the initial product vision
❏  Worked with the Data Science team and clinicians to feed/train the AI assistant
❏  On-boarded, managed, and supported a team of 4 Product Designers
❏  Completed the program in 5 weeks

My Role Across the Program

Week 1

responsible for initial product discovery workshop conduction, analysis, and outcomes. MVP scoping and planning. Product roadmap and design team composition planning. Evaluate a design team/partner and interview/hire a design team. Review User Research artifacts (patient interviews and surveys).

Week 2

on-board a design team, design direction, discovery workshops facilitation across multi-disciplinary teams of stakeholders (data science,  development, business and clinical) daily collaboration with the Duphaston team to validate solutions.

Week 2-5

Design team support and leadership, agile user centric sprint rituals, iterative approach, product brand and design system development, tight collaboration with engineering, data team, business and clinical partners. Mentoring, guiding and supporting design teams; Liaison between design, dev, business and clinical. MVP prototype is done!

Problem

We needed an interactive prototype that fulfilled four primary functions:

  • Identifying women’s unmet needs and preferred information channels throughout the IVF process

  • Inspiring the development of “beyond the pill” support services

  • Providing crucial and carefully curated information to both the women and their partners

  • Receiving positive feedback from stakeholders, clinics, and partners to move the project forward

With relatively tight timeline constrictions our team gathered preliminary subject research from the client and jumped into the project head-first.

Key Assumptions

❏  Clinicians training AI to answer patients

❏  User convenience – Mobile first, Cloud architected

❏  Privacy and security by design

❏  Test authenticity verified per test

❏  Available for iOS first

PROCESS

We approached the project with traditional UX research and design methodologies, as they helped us to identify the most critical elements of the application. These specific research activities and analyses provided feedback from end-users at an early stage, significantly shortening the timeline and number of edits.

Finally, when the team had completed the personas, artifacts, and overall user needs,  we moved on to finishing the design tone and creating high-fidelity visuals to share with the stakeholders.

Key Takeaways

Challenges

●  Working at a very fast-pace to meet the deadline of 5 weeks to create proof of concept

●  User Interviews were not possible to set up in such short time due to HIPAA rules

●  Needed to utilize and partner up with various teams to validate the product capabilities

Solutions

  • Critical Proof of Concept "must have" and "nice to have" estimation was conducted in order to prioritize features and roadmap the process

  • Utilizing existing clinical data and user interviews in order to build out the user personas and use cases

  • Kicked off with a discovery workshop involving all key stakeholders/partners in order to align on the vision and capabilities

Project Results

Within 5 weeks we were able to go from zero to a Proof of Concept of the application. The prototype we created then enabled our technical partners to quickly gain a clear understanding of the functional requirements. The Proof of Concept helped to secure funding for future product development in support of the Abbott Division of the Established Pharmaceuticals' drug Duphaston.
